Post 401 Gets Another Shot at Piscataway

South Brunswick starts American Legion playoffs 1-1

One of the reasons why South Brunswick Post 401 was excited about playing in the American Legion baseball districts at North Brunswick Community Park was it set up a possible rematch with Piscataway.

South Brunswick has gotten its wish.

After coming away with a win and a loss in its first two playoff games, South Brunswick will play Piscataway at noon on July 23.

"Everyone was looking forward to playing Piscataway again," South Brunswick Manager Tony Cosumano said. "Well, now they have their chance. Hopefully, we'll play a little better against them. We haven't scored off them in 23 innings."

In three league games this year, Piscataway defeated South Brunswick 1-0, 2-0 and 2-0.

One clear positive for South Brunswick is the team comes into the Piscataway game after what was arguably its most impressive offensive showing of the year.

South Brunswick scored 10 runs in the bottom of the third and went on to a 15-7 win over Glen Rock on July 21.

"It's always nice to score a lot of runs," Cosumano said. "We were down 4-0 and came back with those ten big runs. We stayed on top of them the rest of the way."

In one stretch in the third inning, eight straight South Brunswick batters reached. This included homers by Dominic Forcella and PJ Delacruz.

"Those were both bombs," Cosumano said.

Forcella finished with two hits, two runs scored and three RBI. Chris Winkleman and Ariel Torres (two RBI) both had three hits and four runs scored. Kevin Mayce had three hits, four RBI and a run scored. Robbie Fliegelman had two hits and a run scored. Ray Lang had two hits, two RBI and a run scored.

South Brunswick started the state playoffs with an 8-4 loss to Mount Morris on July 20. South Brunswick led 4-2 before Mt. Morris scored three times in the sixth and three more in the eighth.

Forcella homered in the loss and has a dinger in both of Post 401's playoff games. Ariel Torres had three hits and a run scored. Kevin Mayce had two hits and two RBI.

"The team we lost to was good, but we're at least as good as them," Cosumano said. "We certainly had our opportunities in that game."

Now, the big opportunity for South Brunswick is another chance at league rival Piscataway.

"We'll see what we can do," Cosumano said. "The guys all wanted another chance against them. Well, now they have it."
