Wrestleback Round Marks End of The Road For Del Piano

Viking senior falls in first round of Saturday action at state finals.

When he returned to Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on Saturday morning, Lucus Del Piano knew a loss in the opening bout meant the end of his South Brunswick wrestling career.

Taking on Connor Gabriel of Roselle Park, Del Piano did everything he could to emerge victorious, but in the end the Region 3 third place finisher proved to be too much. Gabriel advanced to the second round of wrestlebacks beating Del Piano by the close score of 7-5.

For Del Piano, he was still able to walk off the high school mats for the last time on the biggest stage in the state. He also leaves having taken third place in the Region 5 Tournament.

His trip to Atlantic City also included a win over Colin Egan from Wall in the opening round on Friday night. Egan was coming off of a second place finish in the competitive Region 6 field before Del Piano sent him home with a nail biting 3-2 win.

All told Del Piano finishes his senior season with a record of 33-9.
