South Brunswick Girls Tennis Off to 4-0 start

Squad has nice mix of youth and inexperience

Thanks to a good mix of young and experienced players, the South Brunswick High School girls tennis team is off to a 4-0 start this season.

South Brunswick picked up its fourth win with a 5-0 victory over North Brunswick on Sept. 14.

South Brunswick is coming off an 11-6 season in which it graduated a lot of its top singles players. Fortunately, the team has a very talented freshman class joining the squad.

"We expect another successful season, with incoming freshman vying for the top three singles spots," South Brunswick Coach Nancy McDonald said.

Avni Bali, a freshman, plays at first singles. Tanya Krishna Kumar, a freshman, plays at second singles. Surya Ramesh, a freshman, is also an option at singles.

Mara Stegaru, a junior, plays at third singles for South Brunswick.

"Returning seniors provide experience in the doubles positions," said McDonald, who is entering her sixth season as the coach. John Colli is in his sixth season as an assistant.

Julie Sendner and Alex Zaros, both seniors, play at first doubles. Cimrin Bhalla (junior) and Tanvi Parmar (senior) started the year at second doubles. Chental Song-Bembry (sophomore) has also gotten some action at second doubles.

Other members of the squad that could get some playing time this season are Kiriti Gupta (senior), Surya Ramesh (freshman), Ritu Tadinada (senior), Emily Tiao (junior) and Sanjana Metta (senior).

South Brunswick opened the season with a 4-1 win over Old Bridge on Sept. 9. The team also had a 4-1 win over Piscataway on Sept. 12. South Brunswick's other win was 5-0 over Edison on Sept. 13.

South Brunswick will try and improve to 5-0 when it plays at St. Joseph on Sept. 15.
