South Brunswick Girls Hoping to Conclude Successful State Championships

The South Brunswick High School girls track team earned seven medals in four different events last week at the Meet of Champions.

The South Brunswick High School girls track team earned seven medals in four different events while competing in The Meet of Champions at Old Bridge on June 9.

Four of the medals came in the 4x100. Alicia Osley, Mariah Browne, Jana Baker and Rachel Johnson placed fifth in a time of 48.52.

"I am pleased that we earned medals in four events (so far), but being somewhat of a perfectionist I was hoping for some better marks," South Brunswick Coach Stefan Moorhead said. "The 4x100 is certainly capable of running faster so, hopefully, they will show that next week at nationals.

"The other three medalists were a bit off their season bests, but medaling at the Meet of Champions is obviously a nice accomplishment, especially considering how hot it was (June 9)."

The top eight finishers in each event earn a medal. Alicia Osley was fourth in the 400 in a time of 57.01. Cayla Del Piano was seventh in the 1600 in a time of 5:06.05.

"It was the first individual medals for Cayla and Alicia at an outdoor Meet of Champions," Moorhead said. "I'm proud of them."

Amber Brown was eighth in the discus with a distance of 120' 10". This is the second year in a row she has earned a medal at The Meet of Champions.

Mariah Browne placed ninth in the long jump with a distance of 17' 5". She was the defending state champ in the event and also won the Group IV meet last week.

"Unfortunately, Mariah could not find her top form and missed the long jump finals by less than one inch," Moorhead said. "It was disappointing, but I told her that it does nothing to change what a great season and career she has had. She has been outstanding since her freshman year and we are proud of all that she has accomplished."

Because it began to thunder and rain before the event was concluded, The Meet of Champions was suspended and will conclude on June 13. The 4x400 is the only event the South Brunswick girls are competing in.

Janae Baker, Cayla DelPiano, Joy Spriggs and Alicia Osley will run the event when The Meet of Champions gets back to action.

"We are hopeful that our 4x400 will conclude a successful meet for us," Moorhead said.
