Project Graduation Fundraiser to Help Students Enter Prom Season

Fashion Show to be held Friday night in Princeton will help defray cost of event for students.

In an effort to provide outgoing seniors with a drug-free and alcohol-free graduation night, South Brunswick High School's Project Graduation program will be holding its first major fundraiser of 2011 with tomorrow night's SBHS Project Runway: Prom Preview Fashion Show at CanDo Fitness Club in Princeton.

"This is a fun event and we hope to get a good turnout from students," said treasurer Christine Mariano.  "This is a good chance for them to get into prom mode and think about what they're going to wear.  We also offer coupons and promotional items from vendors to help defray the cost and make the prom more affordable."

Project Graduation is a nationwide event held following high school graduation to provide seniors an opportunity to celebrate their graduation with friends in a safe, substance and alcohol-free environment. It began 32 years ago in Oxford Hills, Maine after seven alcohol and other drug related deaths of teens during the graduation season of 1979.

Project Graduation has been organized and funded in South Brunswick since 1992 through the fundraising efforts of parents and local community organizations, including the South Brunswick Municipal Alliance Against Substance Abuse.

"We wouldn't be able to do this every year without their help," Mariano said.

Project Graduation will be held at the Funplex, in Mt. Laurel on June 22.  This year there are about 690 graduating seniors at SBHS and the Project Graduation program typically sees about 550 students attend the event at no fee.  Therefore, Project Graduation needs to raise about $45,000 to provide the event to students at not cost.

"This is an event that is for everybody and not just one group of students," Mariano said.  "It doesn't matter how involved in the school they are, this is still a great event for them.  It's a good cause and everybody benefits from it."

SBHS Project Runway will be held at CanDo Fitness Club on Friday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Gowns, dresses, and tuxedos will be modeled, as well as fitness and casual wear available from CanDo.

There will be discounts and prizes, music, refreshments, and more.  A ticket to the Junior and Senior prom will also be raffled off. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. For more information on the fashion show or Project Graduation e-mail sbhsprojectgraduation@gmail.com
