Deadline for Candidates to File for South Brunswick BOE Election Moved to June

Candidates interested in running for the school board in the November election have to file their nominating petitions by June 5.

At their regularly scheduled meeting of February 6, 2012, the South Brunswick Board of Education approved

Members of the school board whose terms would have expired after the April 2012 election will continue to serve until the board’s organization meeting, which will be held the first week in January 2013. Additionally, the terms of all other board members will be extended to January 2013.

Candidates running for the school board in a November election have to file their nominating petitions by the date of the June primary election. This year that date is June 5.  They can withdraw from the election up until September 7, 2012.  The filing officer for November school elections is the county clerk.

While the election date is being moved, the budget process is not affected. All districts must still hold public hearings on the budget.  In 2012, the hearings must be held between March 22 and March 29. The South Brunswick Board of Education has tentatively scheduled the public hearing on the budget for Monday, March 26, 7:30 p.m. at their regularly scheduled Board of Education Meeting.

Unlike the April election, if the school election moves to November, the school board will not incur base costs for the payment of any inherent costs of the election.  According to the new legislation, the school district and the county board of elections will agree that any increase in the costs, charges, and expenses that may be associated with holding the school election simultaneously with the general election will be paid by the school district.  Guidelines will be established by the Secretary of State.
