Catholic Schools Week at St. Augustine of Canterbury School
A week full of activities and service at St. Augustine of Canterbury School.
A celebration of Catholic education will be held all week at schools throughout the country, and at the in Kendall Park. There are 132,656 private and public schools in the U.S., with 6,980 Catholic elementary or secondary schools, according to the Department of Education.
Schools typically celebrate Catholic Schools Week with open houses, Masses, and a variety of activities for students, families, parishioners and the community. The theme for Catholic Schools Week this year is “Catholic Schools: Faith. Academics. Service.”
The opening day ceremony at St. Augustine begins today at 8:15 a.m. The school will host Reading and Writing Rap Day, with the entire school joining in. Two teachers will be guest celebrities: 25 cent and Lil” Scam (based on popular rappers), while the students will be dressed as rappers, with jerseys, caps and glasses

On Wednesday, which is National Digital Day, students will be creating their own stories in a collaborative effort using a Web 2 tool called Story Bird. The stories will be shared in a special celebration on Friday. Parents will be able to purchase the books (paper or hard cover) while enjoying the presentations on the large projection screen in the gym on Friday.
A school liturgy will be celebrated at 10:15 a.m. Thursday for vocations, including Brother Robert Sheeley, who will celebrate 60 years as a Brother of the Sacred Heart and 80 years of life. The Religious Teachers Filippini Sisters will also renew their promises.

A service day will be celebrated with a locomotion service train, created with cans and boxes of food for the Food Pantry of St. Augustine of Canterbury School and the South Brunswick Food Pantry. The train will be designed and created by the Odyssey of the Mind Teams at the school into a train sculpture. The sculpture will carry donations to the Embrace Kids Foundation and the names of blood donors for the Hugs for Brady Foundation in Kendall Park. The train will be revealed on Friday to the school community.
