Work Begins on Route 1 Drainage Improvements

Project expected to alleviate flooding at Ridge Road, Wynwood Drive intersections along Route 1.

With a roadway that floods over during nearly every period of heavy rain, the state this week began work to alleviate one of South Brunswick's worst problems along Route 1.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation started preliminary work Monday on a drainage improvement project along Route 1 south that seeks to upgrade facilities on the Ridge Road jughandle ramp and at the Wynwood Drive intersection in the township.

Preliminary construction activities began this week, which includes site mobilization and sign installation that requires periodic shoulder closures.

The $2.2 million project is expected to alleviate the constant flooding issues that affect the intersection during periods of heavy rainfall. The project includes the construction of new underground drainage facilities at the Ridge Road jughandle and will provide new inlets along the curb. In addition, the project will place new stormwater drainage facilities with additional inlets and pipes at the Wynwood Drive intersection.

Along with reducing flooding, the DOT expects the drainage systems to help alleviate icing hazards on the roadway as well. Once the drainage improvements are completed, the roadway will then be resurfaced to provide a smoother asphalt surface.

The work will be limited to off-peak commuter hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with two travel lanes maintained during the day, and from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. during weeknights. On weekends, work will be performed from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m.

One travel lane will be maintained at all times during overnight hours. There is also expected to be day time construction operations at the Ridge Road jughandle ramp, behind the construction barrier.

The DOT will use message signs to notify motorists of any upcoming traffic pattern changes on Route 1. The drainage project is expected to be complete by the end of the year, according to the DOT.
