Veterans Day: Traditionally Sunday, Celebrated Monday

No matter the calendar date, it is a day of remembrance and thanks.

Sunday is officially Veterans Day, a time to recognize and honor those who have served in our nation’s military. Have you thanked the veterans you know?

This year, since Veterans Day falls on a weekend, it will be officially commemorated Monday, Nov. 12.

The Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I, took effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed "November 11" as the first remembrance of the end of the Great War:

"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

In 1926, Congress officially recognized the end of WWI and laid the foundation for Veterans Day celebrations. Later, in 1938, Congress approved Nov. 11 as “Armistice Day," changed to “Veterans Day” in 1954.

On 1 November 2012 in the early hours of the morning, a NJ family was awoken and told their 22 yr old son and Navy SEAL was killed during a combat operation in Afghanistan. Many people did not even know on November 9th that NJ Flags were flown at Half-mast to honor Special Warfare Operator Second Class Matthew Kantor as he was being laid to rest here in NJ. At the conclusion of the services and military honors, all of the SEALs that attended take their "Trident" off of their uniform and place it on the coffin to be laid to rest with their Brother as an ultimate sign of respect. Sadly, there are those who will steal what our brave men and women earned and died doing. I would ask that you give the gift of time to us Veterans and Servicemembers: Time. If you truly want to show your respect and show our servicemembers and veterans that we value the magnitude of their sacrifice, then call our Senators and ask them to support the Stolen Valor Act of 2011. This revised Act clearly targets and punishes those who misrepresent their alleged service with the intent of profiting personally or financially. These miscreants cause awful damage in the wake of their lies most of which cannot be undone. Do your part and take 21 seconds of your time to call Senator Lautenberg at (202) 224-3224 and Senator Menendez at (202) 224-4744 and ask them to support this Act.

Yes I did know about this young man being killed in Afghanistan because I also lost a son in Iraq. I support and honor our veterans and what they mean to this country. Have personally met both Senator Lautenberg and Menendez and know that they respect and honor our servicemen. They will support this bill. Please feel free to look into the GiGo Fund that takes care of our returning veterans and their families.
