Turn in Expired or Unused Medication Saturday to South Brunswick Police

The South Brunswick Police Department will take part in the national initiative to take back expired or unused prescription drugs.

Chief Raymond Hayducka has announced that the South Brunswick Police Department will again take part in the national initiative to take back expired or unused prescription drugs. This Saturday April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. you can drop off medications at the police department.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. More than seven million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

Each day, approximately 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time, according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.

"Last September we hosted the event and 33 pounds of medication were turned in," Chief Hayducka said.  "The amount of medication turned in reinforced the need for this type of program."

Detective John Penney is the program coordinator. If you have any questions you can contact him at (732) 329-4000 ext. 7496.
