Heavy traffic has been reported near the intersection of Route 1 and Major Road this morning. The traffic light at the intersection was disabled following a motor vehicle accident early this morning.

At about 5 a.m., a vehicle traveling on Route 1 north struck the light's control box at the intersection, before fleeing from the scene after the crash.

As a result of the impact, the traffic signal has been disabled. Because of the outage, all traffic attempting to cross over Route 1 from Major Road has been forced to go north on Route 1, while all traffic traveling on Sand Hill Road has been forced to go south on Route 1.

South Brunswick Police are reporting that traffic is heavy in the area but still flowing. The Department of Transportation estimates repairs to the traffic light could take most of the day.
