South Brunswick Police Charge Two with Setting Sunday Brush Fire

South Brunswick Police have charged two people with setting a fire Sunday afternoon in Kendall Park.

The fire resulted in the evacuation of three homes and an injury to one firefighter. The fire was reported at 3:37 PM in an open area to the rear of Stockton Road.

The Kendall Park, Monmouth Junction, Kingston, and Franklin Fire Departments along with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service worked to extinguish the blaze. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes, police said.

An investigation by Officer Monica Shearer determined that two people at the scene of the fire when police officers arrived had set the fire.

Maryum Salam, 18, of South Brunswick and a 15-year-old juvenile have been charged with arson for setting the one acre fire. Both were taken into custody late Sunday evening. They have both been released pending their first court appearance.

One Kendall Park firefighter injured his ankle while battling the blaze. He was taken to a local area hospital for treatment.
