A powerful thunderstorm passing through the area has left thousands in Middlesex County without power and caused a road closure in South Brunswick.

Culver Road has been closed between Georges Road and the train tracks due to a snapped utility pole. South Brunswick Police said there is currently no estimate available for when the pole will be fixed. Taylor Road at Jefferson Court is closed due to a downed wire lying across the roadway.

Finnegans Lane at Route 27 has been reduced to right turn only due to a traffic light outage. It's currently unknown how long the roadways will be closed.

PSE&G is reporting 2,000 customers without power in Middlesex County. A statement from PSE&G said the company has all available personnel and supplies on hand to restore power and crews will be working through the night.

Strong winds are making repair work difficult by increasing the chances of downed wires and associated power outages.

The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Middlesex County until around 8:45 p.m. and a severe thunderstorm watch until 11 p.m. The warning indicates the possibility of damaging winds, hail and lightning as the storm moves through.

Customers can report power outages by calling 800-436-PSEG or logging in to http://pseg.com/myaccount.
