Sayreville Man Dies of Injuries from Crash on Route 1

Jimmy Rivera, 41, died of complications from injuries he suffered in an October 2012 crash on Route 1.

A Sayreville man died Wednesday night as a result of complications from injuries he suffered in a crash last year on Route 1.

Jimmy Rivera, 41, was listed in critical condition after his vehicle struck a dump truck on Oct. 24, 2012.

Police said Rivera was driving north on Route 1 in a 2004 Kia Sportage, when his vehicle struck the rear of dump truck stopped at the intersection between Independence Way and Ridge Road.

Rivera was originally treated at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick before being transferred to a rehabilitation center, where he suffered complications, police said. 

An investigation by the South Brunswick Police Traffic Safety Bureau led authorities to believe that driver fatigue may have played a part in the accident. Police said that Rivera was not wearing a seatbelt at the time crash.
