Police Save Despondent Monmouth Junction Man Who Drove Car into Pond

Officers head into waist high water to save unconscious man from retention pond in front of Red Roof Inn.

South Brunswick Police rescued an emotionally disturbed township man whose car was found in a retention pond in front of the Red Roof Inn on Route 1 last night.

At 8:30 p.m. Thursday, a Monmouth Junction male in his 40's drove into the pond near the intersection of Route 1 and New Road for unknown reasons. South Brunswick Police spokesman Sgt. Jim Ryan said the man was found unconscious, but police do not believe the man lost consciousness as a result of the accident.

"It's not clear if he had taken medication or alcohol, but it doesn't appear the accident caused him to lose consciousness," Sgt. Ryan said. "His family members indicated he had been depressed prior to the crash."
