Pedestrian Struck and Killed by Train Along New Road in Monmouth Junction

Pedestrian was hit at about 7:30 p.m. along Northeast Corridor as trains were shut down for 45 minutes.

A pedestrian was struck and killed by an Amtrak train along New Road in Monmouth Junction this evening.  At 7:34 p.m. police responded to the Northeast Corridor rail lines that run by the roadway after receiving the call reporting a person had been hit by a train.  

"The facts about how this happened are not clear yet," said police spokesman Sgt. James Ryan.  "All we know at this point is that the pedestrian was hit by the train and killed.   We're still working to determine what exactly went on."

Sgt. Ryan said the victim was killed on impact.

South Brunswick Police and Amtrak Police are currently investigating the case.  Police are not releasing any details about the victim until the investigation is complete.

All trains between New Brunswick and Princeton Junction were shut down for approximately 45 minutes after the incident, Sgt. Ryan said.
