Pedestrian in Serious Condition After Being Struck by Car on Route 1

New York man struck crossing Route 1 Thursday evening while wearing dark clothing.

A New York man is in serious condition after being struck by a car while crossing Route 1 Thursday evening.

At 6:58 p.m., Wilson Estracio, 44, of Corning, N.Y., was attempting to cross the northbound lane of Route 1 near Deans Lane when he was struck by a 2012 Nissan driven by a 60-year-old Staten Island man, police said.

The subsequent investigation by Officer Frank Mongalieri of the South Brunswick Traffic Safety Bureau determined the driver of the Nissan was headed north on Route 1 when he passed the Deans Lane intersection. The driver then observed Estracio in the right-hand lane wearing all dark clothing, police said. The driver attempted to swerve out of the way, but was unable to avoid hitting Estracio, according to police.
