Operation Safe Schools Begins Again in South Brunswick

Program provides an increased police presence at all district schools during the start of the new year.

A new school year brings the return of an ongoing initiative between South Brunswick Police and the South Brunswick School District.

The South Brunswick Township Police Department is once again implementing “Operation Safe Schools,” a program the places officers at all district schools during the start of the school year. The program helps to ensure the safety of kids as they walk to school and wait at bus stops to be picked up.

“Operation Safe Schools is a plan that increases officer presence at each school," said Chief Raymond Hayducka. "The officers will be able to assist parents and students at the start of the new school year. The enhanced presence will form a safety zone around schools where added traffic enforcement will take place."

South Brunswick Police are reminding motorists of two important traffic rules to bear in mind with kids starting to walk to school again.

  • Speed limit around schools is 25 mph
  • Motorists must yield to pedestrians crossing in crosswalks

"It is common to have an adjustment period for motorists with increased bus traffic and pedestrians crossing," Hayducka said. "We are focused on making sure the 9,000 students heading back to school and the motoring public have a safe transition.”
