North Brunswick Man Charged in Fatal Route 1 Crash

George Rizzo was charged with aggravated manslaughter after he allegedly ran a red light and smashed into a car, killing the driver.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office charged a North Brunswick man with causing a fatal accident on Route 1 last week.

George Rizzo, 30, was charged with aggravated manslaughter after he allegedly ran a red light and crashed into a car driven by Claudia Lopez, 41, also of North Brunswick, at the intersection of Route 1 south and North Oaks Boulevard.

An investigation by North Brunswick Police and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office was struck broadside by a sport utility vehicle driven by Rizzo.

Investigators determined that Rizzo was "grossly intoxicated" and driving recklessly at the time of the crash. According to police, Rizzo's vehicle was missing its right front and right rear tires as he was headed south on Route 1.

Superior Court Judge Diane Pincus set Rizzo's bail at $350,000 with no 10 percent cash option. Rizzo must also surrender his driver's license and may not operate a motor vehicle.
