Man in Critical Condition After Route 1 Crash

Police said traffic was backed up for two to three miles during rush hour Wednesday morning.

A male victim is in critical condition Wednesday morning after his vehicle struck a dump truck on Route 1.

The accident was reported at 6:07 a.m. this morning. Police said a man driving north on Route 1 in a 2004 Kia Sportage struck the rear of dump truck between Independence Way and Ridge Road.

The victim was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where he is in surgery for critical injuries, according to police spokesman Sgt. Jim Ryan.

Route 1 north was shut down to one lane for about two and a half hours as the accident was investigated. Police said traffic was backed up almost three miles on the northbound side of Route 1 and about one-half mile on the southbound side.
