Franklin Township Man Killed in Route 27 Crash

Police said the 50-year-old victim's vehicle struck a utility pole for unknown reasons.

A 50-year-old Franklin Township man was killed Tuesday evening after his vehicle struck a utility pole on Route 27.

Police spokesman Sgt. Jim Ryan said the victim was pulling out of the CVS just north of Beekman Road at about 9:20 p.m. in a 1999 Jeep. The victim made a left-hand turn onto the northbound side of Route 27 when for unknown reasons, he lost control of the vehicle and struck a utility pole.

The victim was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where he was pronounced dead at 9:39 p.m. Sgt. Ryan said the investigation is ongoing and it's possible a medical condition led to the fatal crash.

Traffic on the northbound side of Route 27 was diverted onto Beekman Road for a few hours as the South Brunswick Police Traffic Safety Bureau investigated the crash.
