A 24-year-old Franklin Township man was charged on Monday with robbing the Radio Shack on Route 27 at gunpoint in December. Police say the suspect, identified as Edemo Bowers, is part of a larger robbery ring that has stolen more than $100,000 in merchandise since October, according to police.
, according to police spokesman Sgt. Jim Ryan. The employee was "roughed up" by the suspects during the incident and suffered minor injuries, according to police.
Bowers' arrest on Monday was the result of an extensive collaborative effort between the Edison, Franklin, and South Brunswick Police Departments, with assistance from the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.
For the past four months, the agencies investigated similar robberies carried out in all three communities. In each incident, two suspects would enter a cell phone or electronics store and talk to an employee for a few minutes, before pulling out a gun and ordering the employee to the ground, according to police.
The suspects would then steal cash, cell phones and other electronic devices, police said.
On Thursday, Edison police captured two suspects while they were robbing the T-Mobile store in Edison, across from the Menlo Park Mall. South Brunswick detectives then went to Edison, working with Edison and Franklin investigators to tie the cases together.
While searching a Franklin township residence, detectives were able to recover items that were allegedly stolen during the robbery of the South Brunswick Radio Shack.
Bowers is currently lodged in the Middlesex County Correction Center. Bail information is not yet available.
Police are still seeking additional suspects in the robberies.
"Edison surveillance detectives stopped these armed robbers in progress without any injuries, that is tremendous police work," said South Brunswick Police Chief Raymond Hayducka via release." The coordination from all the agencies involved allowed investigators to quickly link these suspects to all the robberies. Stopping these suspects is a credit to all those involved."
