Dayton Teen Charged in Route 130 Robbery, Possession of Stolen Firearm

An 18-year-old Dayton resident hit with possession of a stolen firearm and robbery charges after he allegedly stole a woman's iPhone from her hand as she was leaving work.

A teenager from Dayton is facing robbery and weapons charges following an incident where he allegedly stole a woman's iPhone from her hand as she was leaving work on Route 130.

Warren Mitchell, 18, was charged with robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm and three counts of burglary to a motor vehicle following a reported robbery Friday evening.

At 7:29 p.m. Friday, a 39-year-old woman was leaving her job on Route 130 by Wheeling Road when she was accosted accosted by a male suspect in the parking lot, who grabbed her iPhone from her, police said. The suspect then ran towards the highway and left in a black Nissan Maxima, which police were able to view on surveillance video.

About two hours later, Detectives Ken Herman and Dennis Yuhasz located a black Nissan Maxima on David Court that matched the description of the vehicle used in the robbery, according to police.

A subsequent investigation allegedly linked Mitchell, the vehicle's owner, to the parking lot at the time of the robbery, police said. During a search of Mitchell’s vehicle, detectives allegedly recovered a loaded .44 Magnum handgun, three laptops, and the iPhone that was stolen from the Route 130 parking lot, according to police.

Officers then traced the handgun as having been stolen in a 2009 burglary in Reading, Pennsylvania, according to police.

Mitchell is being lodged in the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in lieu of $50,000 bail.

“This type of crime is rare, but the aggressive response and diligent case work resulted in the arrest," said Chief Raymond Hayducka. "In addition, the team took a stolen handgun off the streets. Their work exemplifies the best of our agency.”
