Cops: Dayton Man Obtained Vehicle Titles for Money from Undocumented Citizens

Township man allegedly registered 22 vehicles at the Motor Vehicle Commission Office.

A Dayton man was charged Tuesday for tampering with vehicle titles before selling them to undocumented individuals.

James Chen, 59, was charged with falsifying records and tampering with public records after a joint investigation by South Brunswick Police, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission and the New Jersey Division of Banking and Insurance.

Police said Chen allegedly titled and registered 22 vehicles at the Division of Motor Vehicle Office in South Brunswick since February, 2010. The vehicles were titled under Chen's name, who then allegedly turned the vehicles over to the undocumented individuals, who paid him money in exchange for the titled vehicles, according to police.

At the South Brunswick MVC location, Chen allegedly obtained four fraudulent titles for a 2001 Ford Windstar, a 2003 Saab, a 2003 Kia Sedona and a 2003 Chevy Astro Van, police said.

Chen was issued a summons and released pending his first court appearance.

The MVC is continuing the investigation into the alleged fraud.
