Brunswick Acres Assembly Reinforces Expectations

Brunswick Acres Elementary students attended an important assembly to review and reinforce schoolwide rules and expected behavior.

Last week was a busy one at Brunswick Acres Elementary.  In addition to adjusting to the back-to-school routine after the holiday break, students attended an assembly to review behavioral expectations that were discussed at length earlier in the year. The assembly was broken down by grade level to allow for appropriate modifications and conducted by new Assistant Principal, Mrs. Allison Dubois and Student Assistance Counselor, Ms. Jackie Turner.  The Power Point presentation was created by Principal, Mr. Neel Desai.

According to Administration, the assembly was held in January so as not to "overload" the students with information all at once, and served as a proactive reminder of school-wide rules to reinforce expected behavior. The assembly was held in the school's gymnasium, where a banner hung in the background that reads, "Brunswick Acres Elementary School - Everyone is welcome here.  We care, we share, and we play fair."

The students were very engaged throughout the half-hour presentation.  Many hands went up when Ms. Turner asked, "What is the B.A. Way?"  In unison, the audience responded enthusiastically with "Words and actions we're proud to display!" Ms. Turner asked the students to consider others' feelings, and to choose their words and actions wisely.  "Treat others the way you want to be treated is the key to the B.A. Way.  We all have this in common," she said.

A key theme of the assembly was the importance of being a caring community.  Mrs. Dubois told the students that "the main reason you come to school is to learn, but also to develop friendships." She said, "Different is not better or worse.  Take the opportunity to learn about a classmate's culture, religion, holidays, food, etc.  We are lucky to have the rich diversity that this school offers."

Other topics covered included:  Lunch and Recess Rules, What to Bring To School, Inappropriate Language, and Appropriate Behavior When Coming To and Leaving School.  A brief review of the state's new anti-bullying law was also included.

The assembly concluded with a fun True/False quiz to test the students' memories on the crucial information shared.  When asked to define the district-wide acronym C.A.R.E.S. (Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy, Self-Control), the students scored 100 percent.  Second-grader Riley Jarvis said that she remembered most of the show's material but that it was a good reminder.  Riley added, "Following the B.A. Way was the most important part."
