South Brunswick poetry series, SBPAL mums sale and drive for township Food Pantry highlight events in and around South Brunswick this weekend.

Saturday

Weight Watchers, 300 State Route 18, East Brunswick, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Weight Watchers will be hosting a Lose For Good Open House event on Saturday at their location in East Brunswick. Join them for this very special one-day only offer, prizes, refreshments, recipes and more. The Open House will host a Lose for Good food drive to benefit the South Brunswick Food Pantry. So remember to bring a non-perishable item to donate.

Basic/Beginner Excel Class, 110 Kingston Ln, Monmouth Junction, 10:15 a.m.

Please join this hands-on class on Microsoft Excel 2002 being offered by local Ed Tech Specialist, Lauriene Tschang.  This is a two-session course being offered on Saturday morning September 8 and 15, 2012 starting at 10:15 a.m.  You must complete the class on September 8 to attend the class on September 15.  Seating is limited; registration is required.

  • Saving a Workbook

The class will focus on the 2002 version of the software, which is what is installed on the computers in the Computer Lab. 

Family LEGO Club (Ages 5+ and caregiver)110 Kingston Ln, Monmouth Junction, 2 p.m.

Stop by the library and join the Lego Club. The library will supply the legos and you can share your ideas, techniques, and creations with your friends and other club members. Showcase at the end of each meeting. It has been shown that children learn best through play and there is nothing more fun than playing and building with legos. This program will help children exercise their teamwork, problem solving, and decision making skills. It will also help to build construction skills, improve vocabulary, and strengthen crucial math concepts including sorting, colors, shapes, and patterning knowledge.

The South Brunswick Arts Commission will host its first poetry reading of the fall season on Sunday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m., featuring Basil Rouskas and Hank Kalet.

Basil Rouskas has been writing poetry for over 30 years. His first poetry lines in the Greek language were protests against the military Junta who took over Greece and ruled it until the mid 70’s. He currently writes mainly in English. His first chapbook, Redrawing Borders, was published in 2010 by Finishing Line Press and drew favorable reviews in the Journal of Hellenic Diaspora in 2012. Basil’s poetry has been featured in many poetry venues, including the New York Times, Princeton Public Library Podcast, Helix Magazine, Shot Glass Journal, and TIFERET, A Journal of Spiritual Literature. www.nov-aspire.com

Hank Kalet is a freelance writer and political columnist whose poetry and prose has appeared inThe Aquarian Weekly, The Progressive Populist, City Belt, The Journal of New Jersey Poets, Big Scream, Big Smile, The Writer’s Gallery and numerous other journals. His chapbook, Certainties and Uncertainties, was published in 2010 by Finishing Line Press. He teaches writing at Middlesex County College.

The reading is free, but a donation of a nonperishable food item for the South Brunswick Food Pantry would be appreciated. An open reading will take place after the feature readers and books will be available for sale.

Come out and cheer on the SBPAL Vikings Football Teams, and be sure to check out the "Mum Table" under the gazebo. This week, the mighty Vikings will be playing Trenton at:

  • 8:30 a.m. (Tiny Mites)
  • 10:00 a.m. (Mitey Mites)
  • 11:30 a.m. (Jr. Pee Wees)
  • 1:00 p.m. (Pee Wees).

Beautiful 8-inch potted fall mums will be available right at Rowland while you watch the games. A variety of colors will be available. Order and pay for your mums at the game this Sunday, and pick them up the following week at the Sat., Sept. 22nd home games at Rowland Park. Prices are $ 6 per plant or three for $15, cash or check payable to "SBPAL."  Funds raised will help purchase equipment and uniforms. The SBPAL continues to thank the community for its support.
