Food Pantry Still Seeing Record Numbers

Flood of less fortunate continues in record high numbers during a summer when donations are down.

The summer months continue to take their toll on South Brunswick's less fortunate.

The township Social Services Department had their busiest month to date in July, outside of the holiday program months.

"We will finish the month seeing 88 families in the food pantry, and we have assisted 14 families with financial assistance," said Social Services Director LouAnne Wolf. "We also were able to purchase over $5,300 in much needed food items for the pantry because of our successful fundraisers both with the Stop Aaron from Jumping Campaign and in June the Sigma Unit’s Walk-a-Thon."

The spring also brought in record high numbers at the time, as Social Services saw over 150 families in April and May, with an average of three new families per month. April alone brought the second highest total ever for the pantry at 76 families.

Historically the summer is a very slow time for donations with school out of session, but Wolf thought the flood of aid during the spring would help bridge the gap from the summer to the new school year.

"Anyone who wishes to make these purchases, please drop off to our offices downstairs in the main municipal building Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and if after those hours, we have three blue bins outside of the food pantry where food can be left. We are happy to give you a tax deductible receipt for your generosity."
