A year ago statewide, there were 12,825 people — some children, some elderly — living on the streets, in cars or in shelters. That was nearly 800 more than in 2009.

The count is designed offer a snapshot of how the poorest among us are living. Also, it will help shape the strategies of those in government and social programs who work every day to find them shelter and permanent homes.

Marriage Equality

The state Senate Judiciary Committee will hold its first hearing on bill S1 – “The Marriage Equality and Religious Exemption Act,” which would legalize same-sex marriage in the state.

The bill is expected to pass in both houses of the state Legislature, but be vetoed by Gov. Chris Christie.  Democrats say they might have enough votes to override the veto.
