South Brunswick Recycling Program Changes

Paper items can be mixed with commingled bottles and cans in the same container.

will take effect January 1, 2012 in South Brunswick Township. The basic solid waste service remains the same. However, there are some improvements in the recycling program that will help to increase the amount of material recycled and make it easier for residents to fully participate in the program.

Materials collected curbside or in containers at multi-family developments will be done ‘single stream’ after the first of the year. This means that paper items can be mixed with commingled bottles and cans in the same container. For curbside collection it does not matter which of the existing recycling container(s) (box or round bin) are used.

For dumpster collection, one dumpster will be provided for all acceptable materials. Materials will be placed in the same truck and taken to a special ‘single stream’ recycling plant where items will be sorted for recycling.

The recycling program will also be expanded to include all plastics imprinted on the bottom with the numbers 1 through 7 inside a recycling triangle. Items to include are water, soda, milk, juice, soap, detergent, bleach, shampoo and cleaning agent bottles. Also include clean peanut butter, yogurt and diaper wipe containers, margarine tubs and clear plastic clamshell containers.

Do not include plastic with no symbol, plastic bags, Styrofoam, toys, garbage cans, flower pots. The ‘old’ program only accepted plastics imprinted with either #1 or #2 inside the recycling triangle.

Collection schedules will remain the same with the exception of a small section of the Township. Residents affected will be notified by mail.

South Brunswick is a leading recycling community in New Jersey thanks to residents and businesses who have recognized the benefits of recycling. Their daily recycling habit has saved natural resources, energy, landfill space and money while also creating less pollution and stimulating job growth.

The changes to the program are expected to increase recycling volumes and these benefits into 2012.

Questions about the changes or the recycling program in general should be addressed to the Recycling Division of the South Brunswick Public Works Department at 732-329-4000, extension 7274.
