Excessive Heat Warning Through Saturday

Heat index expected to reach as high as 110 degrees.

The National Weather Service has upgraded the excessive heat watch issued on Tuesday to an excessive heat warning for the entire state, starting at noon Tuesday and lasting through 8 p.m. Saturday.

The heat index is expected to fluctuate between 100 and 110 degrees between Thursday afternoon and Saturday evening, according to the NWS. The temperature is expected be at its hottest on Friday afternoon.

In the event it becomes necessary, the South Brunswick Office of Emergency Management is prepared to open a township cooling center. Residents can contact the South Brunswick Police Department at 732-329-4646 for all heat related emergencies or cooling center needs.

"The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will create a dangerous situation in which heat illness are likely," the NWS said.

Children, senior citizens, people with disabilities and pets are most at risk during excessive temperatures according to the OEM.  Pets are also vulnerable to excessive heat and should never be left unattended in a vehicle, even with the windows down or for a short period of time. Pets should also have a large quantity of fresh water to drink, and be provided a shaded or sheltered area.
