A man and a woman were  of a Newark police officer, two days after the fatal shooting. A two-day manhunt for the gunman who killed the off-duty detective outside a strip club in Paterson ended early Wednesday morning at a hotel in Philadelphia. Police arrested Jerome Wright, 24, the alleged shooter, and his girlfriend, Nashali Gadson, 19, around 3 a.m. for the murder of Michael Morgan.

An Orange police officer was fired for comments posted on Twitter, officials say. The comments were profanity-laced and racially charged, Orange officials announced Friday. Hector Rosado, 29, was an 8-year veteran of the Orange Police Department. [NJ.com]

Despite objections from the National Football League, New Jersey is moving toward allowing sports betting. Gov. Chris Christie said he is prepared to buck any opposition from the NFL on legalizing sports betting in New Jersey, even with the league committed to holding the 2014 Super Bowl in the Garden State. Voters in a statewide referendum Tuesday overwhelmingly approved allowing sports betting in New Jersey, but only if a federal ban affecting the state is lifted or repealed, with 64 percent in favor. A former Hoboken information technology official surrendered to the FBI Wednesday after allegedly , according to a complaint provided by the U.S. Attorney's Office. Patrick Ricciardi will face charges of leaking confidential information and intercepting communications that were meant for Mayor Dawn Zimmer. Ricciardi, 45, is charged in a federal criminal complaint with one count each of accessing a computer without authorization, interception of wire and electronic communications, and disclosure of intercepted wire and electronic communications.

Police are  in Toms River. Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said a gun was recovered from the living room of the home of an elderly couple. Police converged on the home after a Meals on Wheels employee arrived at the home, and discovered two victims had been shot in an apparent murder-suicide, said the police chief.
