Understanding Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Stay safe from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Unintentional, Accidental, Carbon Monoxide Poisonings are still one of the leading causes of poison-related deaths in the United States.

The winter months can increase the number of cases. The causes range from blocked chimneys, to a malfunctioning furnace, to people trying to heat their homes in unconventional ways such as with charcoal grills or leaving the oven door open all day and night.

Another big cause of carbon monoxide poisonings is the incorrect use of generators. During Hurricane Sandy, many people ran generators very close to their house, and even in their garages. This is NOT a proper use and can cause an excessive build up of carbon monoxide. Sadly, the number of deaths from carbon monoxide after Hurricane Sandy was quite large.

Storms are a part of our lives now and we need to be aware of the risks of death when not using generators, heating devices etc properly. These items come with instructions and should be read and followed to prevent unnecessary deaths.

For those cases caused by blocked chimneys or furnace problems, these can be prevented by having a working carbon monoxide detector in your home. Experts suggest you have them in all the rooms where people sleep and any place where carbon monoxide may be generated.

Remember to NEVER use a generator NEAR your doors or windows and NEVER inside your home or garage or even on a deck or patio unless the required amount of distance can be left.

Never use a propane or gas grill indoors.

Be SURE to get your chimneys and furnaces inspected and serviced EVERY YEAR. Things can clog, break and dislodge easily from one year to the next and an inspection could save your life.

Always check the batteries in the carbon monoxide detector. It is worthless if the batteries aren't working!

Be smart. The damage can be done before you even realize what is happening, so take every precaution you can.
