Staying Healthy Physically and Emotionally During the Holidays

How to Keep Yourself Healthy Pysically and Emotionally During The Holiday Season

Well this time of year causes havoc to our bodies and minds. This is the time of year that people drink too much, over eat, and get stressed out beyond belief. The parties, events and holiday dinners don't help. The shopping, decorating and wrapping and family "togetherness" tends to put some people over the edge!

The American Heart Association has reported that this time of the year is the biggest heart attack period. The day after Christmas and New Year's Day being two of the most reported days for heart attacks! Again, the studies show that indulging in food and alcohol are to blame, as is stress, as well as the cold weather and people exerting themselves shovelling, decorating, carrying heavy packages around and more.

We need to take the time to be aware of the dangers this seaason brings and do what we can to prevent it. First, while no one can blame any one for eating the goodies you only get this time of year every now and then, or having a holiday cocktail, or two, going over board on either account can be hazardous to your health.

Make sure you get your rest. People sleep less during this time and lack of sleep also effects both our physical and mental abilities. Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. Don't over do the physical activity of climbing ladders to put out holiday lights or shovel tons of snow if you are not physically able to do so. Do it in small increments or ask for help.

Take OFF as much as you can from your "To Do" list. People try to accomplish super human things during the holidays from working and shopping, to attending every party they are invited to, while baking and wrapping and on and on. Be reasonable and do what you can and only what is necessary.

Last, for some people, the thought of seeing family for the holidays, that they don't see on a regular basis, can cause extra stress and anxiety. If this is the case, limit your time with people who upset you. Avoid situations that make you feel uncomfortable or upset. The holiday time is about being happy and enjoying the season with people you love and care about and who feel the same for you. Surround yourself with love and a positive environment. This also helps eliminate the "holiday blues" that effect so many who are lonely or who get depressed around the holidays.

You CAN do quite a bit to keep yourself happy and healthy during the holidays, so try! You will be glad you did!

Wishing everyone, whatever holiday is yours to celebrate, a joyous and healthy celebration!
