White Castle Clears First Hurdle for South Brunswick Location

Developer still needs to gain site plan approval.

South Brunswick is closer to having a White Castle fast food restaurant on Route 1 after the Zoning Board of Adjustments granted the developer approval for a use variance at its last meeting.

Developer White Castle Systems, Inc. on a 9.92-acre site in an area zoned for commercial use.

The restaurant would be located at 5053 Route 1 south, adjacent to and before the Brunswick Square Mall. The site would have 49 seats in the dining room with a proposed 49 parking spaces in the preliminary site plan.

However, Tom Bray, Regional Director for White Castle, said the family-owned chain derives the bulk of its business from customers using the drive-thru window.

"The drive-thru is all about convenience," Bray told the zoning board last month. "That's why 55 to 60 percent of our business is drive-thru."

The proposed plan would have room for about 9 cars to stack up in the drive-thru lane, with about six to seven cars typical for the drive-thru lane at any one time, according to Bray.

Bray estimated that the restaurant would employ 25 to 30 people, with six to seven employees on duty at one time. The location is expected to provide employment for young people seeking entry-level work.

"We would create some jobs right here in South Brunswick," Bray said.

The location would be open 24 hours per day, as are all White Castle restaurants.

The developer still needs to gain site plan approval and also has some work to do on the site plan before coming back to the zoning board, according to Public Affairs Coordinator Ron Schmalz.

No date has been set for the application to return before the zoning board yet.

Increasing the tax base is a great idea. Plus it's the perfect spot on rt.1. Thank you White Castle.

Why not use up what land is left, plus it's a perfect place for the local thugs to hang out

Haha I agree with both Mr. Miller AND Ms. Cockinos! We really don't want the 'crowd' that White Castle brings, and it's such unhealthy fare, just like McD's and Burger King. What exactly are you trying to do to our beautiful South Brunswick?...and the over 75% of Americans who are overweight? I wouldn't put that stuff in my body if you covered it with spinach. How about working on that mess of a jug handle at Major/Sand Hills instead? Put the money to better use to serve it's residents with safer travel. NO MORE FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS! Maybe just leave the trees alone...or, if you MUST build there, perhaps a fresh produce market a coffee shop or Saladworks? Anything else besides fast food. BLAGH! Who's the brainchild behind these decisions anyway?! Unbelievable....

Can't we do better for our town? I was reading a recent candidate's statement that the character of the Route 1 corridor affects the perception of our town, and now we're giving up a prime location to another fast food outlet? This isn't even a place that offers salads or a coffee bar - as options go it's lower-tier, and adding a couple-dozen minimum wage jobs isn't doing anything meaningful for employment opportunities. Burger King, McDonalds and a Burrito place all within a mile are enough. I'm not anti-business, but I grew up in a part of Queens, NYC that once had real character, but slowly sold itself out one step at a time, and now looks worse than a strip mall. Replacing one fast food site with another is one thing, but if we're going to turn a wooded lot into a commercial site, make it something that will keep South Brunswick's stretch of Route 1 from being known as "Burger Blvd.".
