'Frankenfish' Salmon Moves Closer to FDA Approval—Would You Eat It?

The federal agency says the fish are safe for people and the environment, but critics remain skeptical.

Genetically modified salmon could soon be making its way to your dinner plate, if the Food and Drug Administration grants final approval to a proposal from a Massachusetts bio tech firm.

The fish, dubbed "Frankenfish" by its critics, is Atlantic salmon that has been modified with a growth hormone from Pacific chinook salmon and a gene from an eel-like fish known as ocean pout. The modifications result in a fish that matures twice as fast as regular Atlantic salmon.

The FDA has already determined the fish, created by AquaBounty Technologies, poses no health or environmental risk, according to various media reports. The proposal is now under a 60-day period of public review—the final hurdle to FDA approval.

The genetically modified fish tastes like regular salmon, meaning consumers probably will not be able to tell the difference—and ABC News reports the FDA is unlikely to require special labeling for the fish.

Would you be comfortable eating genetically modified salmon?  Tell us in the comments section.

NZ King Salmon (NZKS) has informed that it will eliminate all of its genetically modified (GM) salmon material. The announcement comes as the US deals with a controversial GM salmon issue. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) informed in a report last month

How can the FDA POSSIBLY claim there is no risk?!? No. I do NOT support genetically modified animals OR food products.

Maybe learn to use what is provided in a manner that isn't wasteful we wouldn't need to "modify" animals and plants. Instead of people learning to conserve and protect nature, we alter everything to fit what we want.

We eat fish because we think it is healthy for us. Meanwhile, the factory-farmed fish that we now eat, is raised on corn, so it no longer has all the omega-3 fatty acids that it is famous for. Frankenfish, along with other GM foods are a travesty! They have NOT been researched and shown to be safe, they are just blindly pushed through... I don't understand what the thinking is to allow our food supply to be permanently destroyed... what arrogance!

Amen, Joanne! Is it any wonder we are getting sick?

No way, never! It's bad enough that corn and tomatoes were genetically modified years ago. And we wonder why we have so many stomach aliments and reflux and cancers and God knows what else!

I challenge anyone to go to the Euro Zone and have a piece of chicken, or corn on the cob, or strawberries from the farm..and tell me if it tastes any better and makes you feel any better!? What the agencies let these multi-million dollar cooperations get away with is simply criminal in this country for the sake of a profit!
