New Exhibit Opens in South Brunswick

Total of 14 local artists offer array of sites and ideas, one artist to give "Gallery Talk" on Oct. 29.

The works of 14 local artists with a range of styles -- using traditional materials as well as classical and contemporary techniques -- will be on display in the South Brunswick Municipal Gallery when “Places of Our Lives” opens to the public.

The new exhibit began on Oct. 9 with a “Meet the Artists” reception. The exhibit, sponsored by the South Brunswick Arts Commission and juried by Yvonne Skaggs, will be available for viewing through Jan. 7, 2013.

The exhibiting artists offer an array of sites and ideas for contemplation.

“Some are fanciful and wondrous and some are charged with sentimental thoughts,” Skaggs writes. “While cultural traditions, specific vistas and buildings and personal imaginings moor our individual spaces, we share and acknowledge our visions and responses, celebrating community.”

The artists in “Place of Our Lives” also jog our historical memories and imagine the future, according to Ms. Skaggs, who was Deputy Director of the Exhibit Department at The Newark Museum for many years and who has been a consultant to the South Brunswick Municipal Gallery since its inception in 2006.

The exhibiting artists are Ahuva Arie (West Windsor), Vimala Arunachalam, Bill Hoo, Pablo Riestra (Plainsboro), Stephanie Barbetti, Marla N. Powers, William Powers (Kendall Park), Ranna Chaudry, Wendy Heisler, Barbara Hochberg (Monmouth Junction), Norma Jean DeVico (Titusville), Carole Grand (East Brunswick), Karen Liao (Princeton Junction), Nancy Scott (Lawrenceville).

One of the participating artists, Ms. Powers, whose work “Reaching for The Sun” imagines the future, will discuss her motivation and inspiration on Monday, Oct. 29 during a “Gallery Talk” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Municipal Building. Admission is free and will offer another opportunity to view “Places of Our Lives.”

The South Brunswick Municipal Gallery art exhibits are funded in part by the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission with assistance through a grant provided by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State.

The Gallery is open weekdays, 8:30–4:30 p.m. and evenings when meetings are scheduled (Monday–Thursday). For more information, call the South Brunswick Arts Commission, 732-329-4000 x7635 or visitwww.sbarts.org.
