South Brunswick Helps Local Senior Celebrate 100th Birthday

Sophie Bennett celebrates 100 years.

The South Brunswick Senior Center hosted The Middlesex County 90+ Birthday Bash on May 30.  Towns included South Brunswick, North Brunswick, East Brunswick, Monroe, Jamesburg, Milltown and Cranbury.  There were 204 people in attendance.

The opening welcome was given by Laila Caune, Director at the Middlesex County Office for Aging and Disabled Services followed by Mayor of South Brunswick Frank Gambatese.  Several County Freeholders and Township Council members were present as well.

The oldest senior present was Sophie Bennett, of East Brunswick, who is 100. She was present a corsage and special certificate.

Entertainment was supplied by South Brunswick Crossroads North Middle school flute ensemble, under the direction of Sandy Olsen, who played numerous familiar tunes.  A delicious turkey lunch was provided by the Middlesex County Senior Meals program.

This event is held annually every May during Older Americans Month.

“There are 3 celebrations held throughout the County," said Christine Wildemuth, Director of the South Brunswick Office on Aging/Senior Center. "Each year we become more and more crowded and have reached our maximum capacity so perhaps for next year the County will have to look into a 4th site. This is a nice problem to have though right?  More and more are living longer but they are healthier and staying active in their communities and senior centers.”
