South Brunswick Community Car to Add Transportation Option

Community cars to serve South Brunswick residents age 60 and up or developmentally disabled people of any age seeking help to get to work.

April 1, 2012 is the start date for a new Community Car Service, part of the Aging in Place PARTNERSHIP (AIPP) transportation plans for a seamless transit service. Created in partnership with the long time established, non-profit EZ RIDE organization from North Jersey, this project is the first pilot for a community such as South Brunswick.

To reach its potential, the Community Car program is seeking volunteer drivers over 21 years of age to drive cars provided, insured, gassed and maintained by EZ RIDE, which will be parked in strategic areas within the Township.  Drivers can sign up for any four-hour time slot that meets their personal schedule, once a week, a month, bi-monthly, etc.

To begin with service will run 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.  If there is enough interest, Saturday’s will be added. All drivers must have a current driver’s license and proof of insurance.

Riders register by completing an application and paying an annual EZ RIDE membership fee of $15 ($25 couple). Accounts are maintained beginning with $20 deposit which will be drawn against each time a trip is scheduled.

They will be sent a monthly accounting. Forms are available at www.AgingInPlacePARTNERSHIP.org, the Senior Center, Library, Charleston Place and Oakwoods.

Test runs have shown this Community Car service saves between 1/4 and 1/5 the cost of taxi services.  The goal is to help fill the gaps between existing public transportation such as the new County M-1 Shuttle bus stop at the Stop & Shop Route 522E in Dayton.

It will also offer independence and choice, shared rides for social activities, help with appointments to the area’s medical facilities, and a way to save gas and money. Riders are 60 plus years or developmentally disabled of any age seeking help to get to work.
