Living Legacies Returns to South Brunswick April 25

South Brunswick High School students present uniquely created monologues from interviews with township residents.

The “Living Legacies” project, recognized as a 2012 National Award Winning Program of Excellence, is scheduled for Thursday, April 25 at 12:30 at the South Brunswick Senior Center.

Students from the South Brunswick High School English Department will present this year’s theme, “Living Legacies: Celebrating Our Cultural Diversity.”

Public Speaking students, under the direction of teacher Catherine LaMoreaux, interviewed local residents about their backgrounds and cultural traditions.  Students then wrote monologues which they will present, in a uniquely created theatre piece, speaking as those they interviewed.

This year’s program explored the rich diversity of cultures that make up South Brunswick and the traditions residents maintain and share from their home countries.

This is the fourth annual “Living Legacies” performance, continuing an intergenerational collaboration between the PARTNERS of Aging in Place PARTNERSHIP – the South Brunswick Office on Aging and the Department of Education.

The projected theme for next year is, “Living Legacies: South Brunswick Heroes and Heroines.”   Know someone you’d like to nominate as a Hero or Heroine? “We welcome suggestions, especially referrals and contacts with individuals interested in being interviewed for the 2014  project or with recommendations for such candidates,” said Art Lee, the Aging in Place AIPP Board facilitator for Quality of Life programs.

The senior center was recently recognized for the program with an award from the National Council on Aging (NCOA).

James Firman, president and CEO of NCOA said, “We congratulate the South Brunswick Senior Center on this innovative program and hope it can serve as a nationwide model for other senior centers around the country.”

The program is free and residents are encouraged to attend.

To quote our recently deceased very special first lady, Ellen Gambatese, “It’s a little slice of our community’s Living History.”
