5 Things to do in South Brunswick this Weekend

This weekend is light on events in town, but that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of things to do in the area.

Friday

, 37 Beekman Road, South Brunswick. The South Brunswick Parks and Recreation Department's ongoing concert in the park series continues with a performance by Spook Handy. The folk musician will be singing about how to make the world a better place. The performance is sponsored by the township Public Works Recycling Division. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held at the South Brunswick Community Center Gym at Woodlot Park, 124 New Road, Monmouth Junction. For rainout information call 732-329-4000 ext. 7686 after 5 p.m. on the day of the concert.

, 110 Kingston Ln, Monmouth Junction. A collaborative story program between the South Brunswick Public Library and the Chinese Heritage School of New Jersey. This family friendly event will be conducted in both Cantonese and English by teachers from the Chinese Heritage School.

7 p.m. You'll have to travel just a bit outside South Brunswick for this one, but it's worth the drive. Familiar songs from the 1950’s-70’s will fill the air at the amphitheater at the Community Arts Center, Sidewalk Serenade, an oldies vocal group, puts on a free performance for the public. Music will include everything from Doo-wop to Motown to classic rock. Lawn seating will be available at the event, and concert goers are encouraged to bring their own blankets and folding chairs. Concert goers can picnic, or purchase cold treats from an ice cream truck that will be at the event.

90 Church St. New Brunswick. Observations about family life provide plenty of material for Shoemaker, who will perform at the Stress Factory July 28 through 30, but fans will also be treated to his famous Lovemaster character.

Sunday

, 175 Oceanport Ave, Oceanport, NJ 07757. Okay, this isn't even close to South Brunswick, but I'm going so no reason the rest of town can't, right? For the second year in a row, Monmouth Park’s signature race is featured on ABC from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. This year’s 44th renewal of the Haskell is expected to feature a showdown between Preakness winner Shackleford and Belmont Stakes winner Ruler on Ice.

Since I won a pretty penny betting on Shackleford in the Preakness (and I only bet on Shackleford because the horse shares a name with the author of South Brunswick Patch's popular "History Shack" column), I will be pressing my luck on Sunday. Hope to see you there, I'll probably be the guy grumbling in the corner about how he lost all his money. Well, one of the guys grumbling about losing money.
