Yo, Hello, Assalamou Alykoum, Namaskar, Namaste, Sat Sri Akal, Hola, Shalom, wasup! (Readers give me more ways to say hello and I'll start including it with every blog post).

In South Brunswick, whether you go to the library, as you visit the public schools, go shopping at the Stop & Shop or the Target, or as you are stopped at any red light in town;  you are bound to see a woman around town wearing a head scarve/covering.

During my recent news readings, I came across a couple stories lately on dressing modestly and “hijab”

From Wikipedia: The word "hijab" or "ḥijāb" (Arabic: حجاب ) refers to both the head covering traditionally worn by Muslim women and modest Muslim styles of dress in general.

Here’s a a link to a PDF pamphlet on “Unveiling the Mystery of Hijab” from a website that most Muslims in the U.S. would consider a legitimate source of accurate information on Islam and Muslims.

With the three articles I’ve linked to and brief definition of hijab I provided above, readers should have a little better understanding of why some women wear a hijab.  In upcoming blogs, I may share some personal anecdotes from Muslim women from our area about their thoughts of “hijab."

Random Rants/Pondering/Musings:

  • I was at the School Board meeting last Monday night when school board member Arthur Robinson discussed the new proposed policy for allowing Advertising on School Property; What do you think? Good idea, pros and cons?
  • Boy Scouts – for the past couple weeks, I’ve been doing a presentation on Citizens in the Community for a local Boy Scout troop. So one of the action items for the troop is to attend a meeting where they can observe how certain elected officials operate.  I asked the troop to decide between attending an upcoming School Board meeting or maybe a Township Council meeting? Any readers want to weigh in on which meeting the troops should attend?
  • This past weekend, the Yankees beat the Mets 2 out 3 games, can you believe it’s been 15 years since the Subway Series started?
  • Randy “Macho Man” Savage of professional wrestling fame passed away a few days ago. I was sad to hear the news.  His Wrestlemania 3 match with Ricky Steamboat is already etched in history as one of the greatest wrestling matches of all time. Rest in peace Randy Savage, you gave this fan many fond memories of watching wrestling growing up.
  • This past Sunday, I had the pleasure of meeting Jacque Rubel from the Aging in Place In Place PARTNERSHIP group and her many friends from around the area.  I’ll write more about the event we were at in a future post.

Hope everyone has a great Memorial Day weekend planned!

Good night South Brunswick!
