When Gov. Chris Christie and legislative leaders moved to shift school board elections to November, one of the aims was to increase voter turnout, which has been anemic in the April school elections. Turnout in the 486 districts that chose to make the change was clearly up on Tuesday, with the presidential election bringing out an estimated 60 percent of the state’s registered voters. But there was little illusion that all those voters who cast ballots for Barack Obama or Mitt Romney also made their way down to the bottom of the ballot, either, with fewer than half of the ballots in some …
Despite personal hardships, shifting polling sites, frustration and anger over electronic and provisional ballots, and confusion and miscommunication regarding new voting rules, New Jerseyans made on thing clear on Tuesday: they wanted to exercise their right to vote. Turnout was high throughout much of the state, despite reports of voting irregularities that included jammed fax lines; email inboxes filled to overflowing with requests for ballots; shortages of provisional ballots at many sites; and gloomy polling places lit only by generator power. And that's the short list. “We have so …
The results are in on Election Day and South Brunswick is returning to an all Democratic Township Council. Incumbent Democratic Councilmen Joseph Camarota and Charles Carley, along with running mate Josephine "Jo" Hochman were elected to three open seats on the Township Council. They defeated incumbent Republican Councilman John O'Sullivan, along with challengers Michael Kushwara and Paul Saltin. The South Brunswick Board of Education race was a tight one, as incumbent Board President Stephen Parker and Peter St. Vincent jumped ahead for two of three open seats, while incumbent Barry …
This past week has been tough one for many of us in South Brunswick in the aftermath of Sandy, but as a community we've pulled together and helped each other.  Being part of a community and a citizen of this great country there are certain rights and obligations we have to meet. One of those obligations is to go out and vote on Tuesday, many important races are going on Nationally, on the State level, on the county level and township level. Having been a former School Board of Education candidate in our great township, I can really appreciate the dedication and efforts of our School Board and…
I am writing to support Barry Nathanson for re-election to the South Brunswick Board of Education. I have served with Barry for nearly ten years on the Board. There is no doubt in my mind that he understands what it means to be an excellent Board of Education member. In addition, he gets it that one of the Board’s major responsibilities is to assure that all students get the best education that we, the taxpayers, can afford, including what students need. I intend to vote for Barry and I urge you to, also. --Marty Abschutz, Dayton

A decision by the state Legislature last summer means voters will decide Tuesday whether New Jersey judges should have to pay more for their pensions and benefits, as other public employees do, or whether a clause in the state constitution means they are exempt. The issue became a subject of debate after the state Supreme Court ruled that judges’ salaries were exempt from revisions imposed by Gov. Chris Christie on public employees’ pensions and health care benefits. In the past, judges paid only 3 percent of their salaries toward their pensions and benefits, leaving taxpayers to pick up the …

Please vote this coming Tuesday for my good friend, Pete St. Vincent, to the South Brunswick School Board. I first met Pete about 15 years ago when our boys were playing YMCA basketball. More recently, I have known Pete through Viking Football, where he has been the President of the Huddle Club for the past seven years or so. I worked closely with him while our son played football, especially his junior and senior seasons. Pete's son, Zack, graduated in 2010 and his son, Matt, graduated in 2011, but he continues to lead the organization well after his sons have finished playing football at …

By Erika Sosa, Rider University In the heated race for New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District, incumbent U.S. Rep. Rush Holt (D-Hopewell Township) and his opponent Republican Eric Beck of South Brunswick took part in a debate last week at Rider University during which they discussed their views about the country’s finances, federal support to America’s cities, school vouchers, and other topics. America is in extreme debt that continues to get worse and Republicans are to blame, according to Holt. “The unhealthiest part of this situation is how we got to this so-called fiscal cliff,” Holt …
Incumbent U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) is seeking a second full term, challenged by a veteran state legislator, state Sen. Joe Kyrillos (R-Monmouth). But as the campaign wears on, Kyrillos increasingly has chosen to run against a different man: former Gov. Jon Corzine. The South Jersey state legislator accustomed to easy victories in his Shore district is far behind Menendez in every poll and so is trying to link his opponent with New Jersey’s last governor, whose popularity plummeted as the recession worsened in 2008 and 2009.. At the same time, nine other contenders, ignored by the …
