Will Seaside Roller Coaster Stay In The Atlantic Ocean?

Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers said the site could become a "tourist attraction" as the boardwalk is rebuilt

 

Could the roller coaster that was swept into the Atlantic Ocean as Hurricane Sandy hit the Jersey Shore remain where it is, standing straight up?

So says Seaside Heights Mayor Bill Akers, who told WNBC-TV in New York that the ride could become "a great tourist attraction" if it stays where it is.   

From WNBC's report:

The picture of the ride, which looks more like a water slide these days, has become an iconic image of the damage Sandy wreaked up and down the coast just over three weeks ago.

But Akers, in an interview with NBC 4 New York, said he is working with the Coast Guard to see if it is stable enough to leave it alone.

If it is, Akers said it would make "a great tourist attraction."

Meanwhile, demolition crews have already finished removing all of the damaged boardwalk. Businessmen like Mike Mergott of Mad Mike's Amusements said he is rebuilding because he is "100 percent sure" families want to come back.

Jim Loundy, who owned several buildings wiped away by the surge is confident he won't see another storm like this for "another 50 or 60 years."

Akers said construction on a new boardwalk should begin in January, and be ready by Memorial Day.

To dangerous metal corrodes and will eventually fall apart can contaiment the water cause issues on the beach and i dont think anyone wants to be reminded of sandy everyday down there

Oh, THAT's what we want people to see: reminders of a monumental tragedy that befell the people of NJ, NY and CT. Brilliant. Let's put up a dangerous, toxic accident waiting to happen to say, "Welcome to the Jersey Shore." I agree with Seaside Bruce regarding the metal capacity of the mayor. Can you say, "last term?"

It needs to come down as soon as possible. Not only is it a reminder of a horrible tragedy for many, but it may very well attract careless individuals who may be harmed or killed by trying to swim out to the rollercoaster to get a closer look. I also can't imagine this being safe for the beach waters over time either, the breakdown of the metals can contaiminate the sea water, and that would only further hurt local buisnesses in the long run too.

I agree with all the comments about it being a needless reminder of the tragedy. But I don't agree with the comments about it being a lure for those stupid enough to try to access the coaster in the water. So what. Let them get hurt. Enough with the nanny complex already. Why should the govt. always have to save us from ourselves? If people are stupid enough to go out there, let them. And for the "metal will contaminate" the sea water, are you kidding me? Since when is rust a toxic material? If that is true, you better get rid of the water pipes in your home, and the Army Corp of Engineers had better pull up the hundreds of wrecked ships they purposefully sink as marine habitats all over the country. Sheesh.

@robert page: to your points about the monies expended to rescue these idiots, most of these resources are already on the payroll. The cost to tear the coaster out of the water is not. Your points about the jagged metal washing ashore are valid. My points were to those who wrote: "the breakdown of the metals can contaiminate the sea water" and "dangerous, toxic accident waiting to happen", etc.

@slyfox: You're taking "toxic" too literally. And what part about "dangerous" and "accident waiting to happen" isn't legitimate? As for most of these resources are already on the payroll," each and every time responders are called to come out it costs. Why set an accident waiting to happen in motion? Bottom line: this is an ugly reminder of a horrible moment in Jersey Shore history. If the mayor thinks the Shore needs THAT to draw tourists, then we have bigger problems than a dangerous (yes, dangerous) pile of twisted metal can resolve.

I absolutely agree. This is a terrible reminder of a terrible event. This is an image that is etched in everyone's minds, all over the internet and on the cover of People magazine. There will be constant reminders for years to come. For me, this event has affected me profoundly because I have been going there since I was a child and have taken my own children. It holds endless memories for me. The ocean has always held a place of solace when I am feeling in doubt. When I saw the devastation I felt like a piece of me was gone. I can't even imagine the loss the people who have lost thier homes, businesses or loved ones must feel. These people have suffered enough-tear it down.

@Susan Hargraves: I understand your feelings completely. The shore is such a remarkable and monumental part of my life as well and I feel as if having this destruction around would be tantamount to having the wrecked car of someone who passed away in an accident, ever there to keep a wound open. I can't imagine WHAT the mayor is thinking.
