Vikings Put Perfect Record on the Line at Edison
The 3-0 South Brunswick High School Vikings will travel to Edison on Friday evening.
After jumping out to a large first half lead and surviving a second half comeback the last two games, the South Brunswick High School football team has shown their character in holding on when momentum shifts against them.
The 3-0 Vikings will hope for a less stressful encounter Friday night as they travel to Edison High School to play the 0-2 Eagles.
SBHS held on for a 27-21 win over Old Bridge last Friday night. South Brunswick built an early 21-0 advantage before Old Bridge closed the gap in the second half.
In the season opener against East Brunswick, South Brunswick had a lead of 28-0 in the first half before shutting the Bears out. Things got tighter in the second games, as SBHS was up 28-3 in its game against Monroe before a furious second half comeback by the Falcons led to a dramatic last second win for South Brunswick.
Last week's game was the Dahrae Ford show, as the Vikings star finished with all four of South Brunswick's touchdowns. Ford had three on the ground and another on a 12-yard pass from TJ Perkowski.
Rutgers-bound Viking TJ Taylor racked up 137 yards receiving and also added 25 yards on a run. Perkowski completed 10 of 15 passes for 179 yards.
On defense, Alex Bercutta led South Brunswick with 7 tackles. Dion Hooper and Donte Strickland both had four tackles, Brian Lee had 3.5 tackles and Ken Drost added 3 tackles.
Edison lost big in both of their games thus far this year. The Eagles fell to Piscataway 32-7 on Sept. 7 and lost to Sayreville 28-6 on Sept. 21.
South Brunswick's varsity team isn't the only football squad with a perfect record, however. The future of SBHS football appears to be in secure hands with the dominating performance from the freshmen squad.
The freshmen team is also 3-0 and has outscored their opponents by a margin of 113-21 so far. The unique aspect of the freshman team is that they're the first group to go all the way through the township Pop Warner program and into the high school program.
Several of the boys on the team have been together since they started in the Pop Warner program in South Brunswick at the age of 7-years-old. Three of those freshmen have been together since they were 5-years-old on the first SBPAL flag football team in South Brunswick.
The kids were also part of the highly successful Crossroads Middle School football team from last year. That team was buoyed by the leadership of team captains Phil Campbell (RB-LB), Rich Hoff (QB-LB), and Josh Nicastro (G-DE).
All the Vikings squads will be looking for support from fans as they hit the road, so for those traveling to show their support, the action will take place at Edison High School, 50 Boulevard of Eagles, in Edison.
The freshman team will kickoff at 4 p.m., with the varsity kicking off at 7 p.m.
