St. Cecilia Knights of Columbus Continue Aiding South Brunswick
Knights raise thousands of dollars for charity while helping residents in need.
The St. Cecilia Knights of Columbus Council #7046 in Monmouth Junction this week announced a mid-year review of the activities they have completed during the 2012-2013 Fraternal Year.
“The members of the Council are grateful for the support of the South Brunswick Community and for those who have been involved in our many events over the past year," said Grand Knight Manny Vitone. "It is always gratifying when people stop and thank us for the work we do or to tell us how they greatly enjoyed the event they attended.”
The Council has held four major events so far this Fraternal Year: the annual Italian Night in October, a Thanksgiving Food Drive, Breakfast with Santa, and Retro Night this past weekend. These events have raised over $3,000 that will be used by the Council in support of St. Cecilia’s Parish and charities in the South Brunswick Community.
As part of the on-going effort to offer parish wide events, the Council worked closely with a number of parish organizations to bring back the annual parish picnic. The event was held during the last weekend of September, 2012 and had rave reviews from the over 400 people who attended the picnic.
With members of the Council overseeing cooking and beverages, attendees had a wonderful opportunity to enjoy great food while taking part in a variety of games and activities. The camaraderie among parishioners has provided for growth among all the organizations within the Parish.
Yet again the Council continued to live out its mission to help those in need. With the double impact of the flagging economy and Hurricane Sandy experienced by so many, the Council sought the help and support of parishioners of St. Cecilia Church through the donation of non-perishable foods and monetary donations.
“We were very pleased and happy with the efforts of the parish and our fellow Knights,” said Deputy Grand Knight Marc Kollar.
Over 600 pounds of food was collected and more than $700 in donations were made to the effort. The donations were used by the Council to purchase turkeys and hams for the South Brunswick Food Pantry. In turn, the Food Pantry distributed all of the donations to those in need in South Brunswick.
During Breakfast with Santa, children from the parish were able to meet Santa while having a hot, homemade breakfast, cooked by the Knights. Families enjoyed their time with each other and the camaraderie with Santa while raising money for a good cause.
Donations were collected for four-year-old South Brunswick resident Ray Fantel who has been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Through generous donations of attendees, over $600 was raised. The Council added $400 to bring the total amount to $1,000.
In mid-January, the Council continued its support of the parish by preparing and serving meals over a weekend for the members of the Faith Formation Program at the Parish who were completing the Confirmation Retreat.
It was a wonderful opportunity for the members of the Council to support a critical event for the Parish that helps in faith formation. At the same time, the Brother Knights were able to lead and show by example the young men taking part in the Retreat how to be the strength of the Parish.
Other events that will be hosted in the coming weeks and months will be the Eighth Annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance on Saturday, March 16, 2013. The Council will host Lenten Pasta Nights on alternating Friday evenings prior to Stations of the Cross at St. Cecilia Church.
In late April 2013, Council members will be seen throughout the township asking for support for citizens with developmental and special needs. In 2012, over $2,000 was raised which was donated to a number of local and regional support organizations including Citizens for Independent Living in South Brunswick.
With 1.6 million members, the Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic family fraternal service organization. It provides members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, the community, families and young people.
Knights of Columbus St. Cecilia’s Council #7046 is located in the Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick, New Jersey and currently has over 100 members. Established in 1978, the Council works to support St. Cecilia’s Parish and the surrounding community through a variety of events held throughout the year. Proceeds from the events are donated on an as-needed basis to local charities.
