South Brunswick Girls Track Wins Fourth Straight CJ Group IV Title

Del Piano wins three events, nine qualify for states.

It's official, the seniors on the  girls winter track team finished the complete sweep.

South Brunswick scored 70 points to win its fourth straight Central Jersey Group IV Tournament this past weekend in Toms River.

"The girls had an outstanding meet," South Brunswick Coach Stefan Moorhead said. "I told the girls that I was most proud of the fact that we scored in all 10 events, making us the only team to do so. It shows that we are a well-rounded team, with good athletes in every event. We also had a good number of points from our senior class, combined with some valuable contributions from our underclassmen."

scored 30 of the points by winning the 800 (2:17.45), 1600 (5:10.66) and 3200 (11:13.16). The time in the 800 was a new meet record.

"Cayla had a phenomenal meet," Moorhead said. "She had never run all three events in one meet before, so to not only run all three -- but to win each in dominating fashion -- was an impressive feat. She is competing at a very high level right now, so we are looking forward to seeing what she can do over the final weeks of the season."

The next big meet for Del Piano will be the Group IV Championships on Saturday. The top six finishers in each event this past weekend earned a spot in Saturday's upcoming action, which will also be held in Toms River.

will also be competing in three events on Saturday. She was third in the 400 (1:01.91), fourth in the 55 (7.6) and was also part of the 4x400 team that placed second (4:09.65). Julia Lekht, Aspen McMillan and Rochelle McDonald also ran in the 4x400.

"Alicia also had a great meet, coming back from a strained hamstring only two weeks before at GMCs," Moorhead said. "She overcame a multiple athlete collision in the 400 to finish third, and then ran a personal best in the 55 to place fourth. She also provided veteran leadership as the anchor of our 4x400 team. The first three legs were two freshmen and a sophomore, none of whom were part of the team last winter."

McMillan added a third (8.73) and Lekht a fifth (9.03) in the 55.

Jada Rae Poku managed a personal best of 4' 10" to place second in the high jump.

Alyssa McFarlane (fourth in shot at 32' 9"), Nateya Harris (sixth in shot at  31' 5") and Lindsay Carbone (sixth in pole vault at 9 feet) also advanced.

The South Brunswick boys placed seventh with 21.5 points. Nine South Brunswick boys qualified for the Group IV Championships.

South Brunswick's best event was the high jump. Three members cleared 6' 2", with Christian Larbie placing second, Kaseem Davis third and Jaleel Alston fifth because of the number of misses.

Adam Dickert was fourth in the shot put (47' 8").

Tre Tisdale, Shawn Kilcoyne. Matt Tamasi and Jose Baxter placed sixth in the 4x400 with a time of 3:33.

Chris Barrood was sixth in the 800.

"The boys also had a strong day, and did about as well as we could have realistically hoped," Moorhead said. "We were very happy to have nine athletes qualify for states."
