South Brunswick Girls Run Best Times in State

Vikings 4x200 and 4x100 fastest so far in 2011.

Coming off a three-day span in which it won twice and dominated a relays meet, the South Brunswick High School girls track team is eager to see if it can do it again.

South Brunswick will host Sayreville and New Brunswick in a tri-meet on Apr. 14. Two days later, it will compete in the Colts Neck Relays.

Going back a week, South Brunswick swept its tri-meet on Apr. 7 and was at top speed in the Metuchen Relays on Apr. 9.

"We had a lot of strong efforts at Metuchen," South Brunswick Coach Stefan Moorhead said. "The 4x100 and 4x200 teams were outstanding. I didn't expect the 4x200 team to run as fast as they did. I told them that they surprised me with how fast they ran this early in the season."

Alicia Osley, Maria Browne, Jane Baker and Rachel Johnson won the 4x200 in a time of 1:42.9. The same group of girls won the 4x100 in a time of 48.9. Both times are the fasest in New Jersey thus far this season.

South Brunswick also won the shuttle hurdles. Jen O'Laughlin, Laura Calderone, Jane Baker and Johnson won in a time of 1:06.9.

"The shuttle hurdle team also ran well," Moorhead noted. "They exceeded my expectations by a couple of seconds."

Fortunately for South Brunswick, it is also a very versatile team. The combination of Amber Brown and Chloe Hall won both the shot put and discus. Kiya Strickland  and Alyssa McFarlane won the javelin.

"The throwers swept all three relays for the second straight Saturday, which shows that they are performing at a high level right now," Moorhead said.

Mariah Browne won the long jump with a distance of 18' 3". Julia Lekht was third in the long jump with a distance of 15' 81/2".

Two days before competing in the Metuchen Relays, South Brunswick swept a tri-meet from JP Stevens (123-16) and Piscataway (82-57).

Mariah Browne won the long jump (17' 7 1/2") and the triple jump (35' 2 1/4") against  both teams.

Brooke Sassman (4' 10" in the high jump), Amber Brown (34' 7 3/4" in the shot put), Chloe Hall (114' 4" personal best in the discus) and Kiya Strickland (94' 8" in the javelin) also had wins against both teams.

"It was nice to start off with two victories in dual meets," Moorhead said. "There were some rough spots, but overall we did well.  I'm happy with how we are progressing at this point in the season."
