South Brunswick Boys Track Hopes to Carry Momentum into Season

Squad has talent and depth.

With over 100 athletes on the roster -- including many that made their mark on the winter season -- the South Brunswick High School boys track team has a winning combination of depth and talent.

"We have a core unit of talented and dedicated seniors and hope that they can model a level of excellence and commitment for our underclassmen," South Brunswick Coach Wilfredo Rivera said.

Derek Forthun, a senior, is a nice combination of depth and talent just by himself. Forthun made the Meet of Champions in the high jump and pole vault. The senior also qualified to compete in the pentathlon at the Nationals.

Dominick Padovano placed in the shot put in the Group IV finals and the Meet of Champions. The talented senior thrower will now try and extend his excellent year into the spring.

Matt Eder, a distance runner, is another senior that advanced to the Group IV finals.

Adam Dickert, a junior, also had an outstanding winter season in the shot. Teamed with Padovano, that's a great start for a weight team.

Other members of the weight team include Dave Krier (senior), Brian Luck (senior) and Barry Potts (senior).

Other seniors on the team are Kotey Ashie (sprints/mid-distance), Tyrin Fairman (sprints/hurdles), Derrick Pee (distance), Stephen Ragany (distance), Juwan Tisdale (sprints/mid-distance), Mike Weber (distance) and Alex Weinrich (distance).

Among the juniors counted on to score points are Tyler Blackburn (distance), Kaseem Davis (jumps/sprints) and Darrell Harper (jumps/sprints).

Sophomores Jaleel Alston (jumps/sprints), Jose Baxter (hurdles), Christian Larbie (jumps) and Jonathan Pitt (jumps) should also help.

South Brunswick is a team that went 6-2 last year. It won the GMC relays and placed third in the GMC championships. It is poised to do just as well --if  not better -- this season.

"This year, like every year, we strive to get better and compete for the conference hat trick," Rivera said. "We hope to go undefeated in the Red Division, win the GMC championship and defend our relay championship title."

South Brunswick will open the season when it takes part at the GMCTCA Relays at South Plainfield on Apr 2. South Brunswick will host a tri-meet on Apr. 5 when it competes against Piscataway and JP Stevens.

It's the start -- well, a continuation if you count the winter -- of what should be a great season.
