South Brunswick Boys Lacrosse Counting on Depth, Experience

Squad hoping to improve on 12-6 mark from 2011.

The boys lacrosse team was very good in 2011. As he prepares his team for the 2012 season, however, Coach Mark Ziminski hopes his boys can be even better.

"We bring back 12 varsity players and look forward to competing again for the GMC (Greater Middlesex Conference) championship," Ziminski said.

South Brunswick was 12-6 last year, with a 6-1 mark in the division. In addition to placing second in the division, South Brunswick was also second in the GMC Tournament. South Brunswick has made the GMC title game nine of the past 11 years. In 2011, it was defeated for the championship by St. Joe's.

South Brunswick finished ranked 8th in the state in Group IV and 46th overall. While those are solid accomplishments, South Brunswick has the talent to be even better in 2012.

Heading the list of returning players are captains Dom Violante and Alex Lorber, both seniors.

"Both are Group IV All-State players who we rely a great deal upon,"  Ziminski said. "Dom had 44 goals last year and Alex (a defender) had 104
ground balls."

Violante is one of five returning players back in the midfield. The others are Colin Quigley (15 goals and 16 assists), Shaun Sterner, Bruce
Redfield and James Mastronardi. Sterner and Redfield are juniors; the others are seniors.

Dan Gorzynski, Anthony Cipriano and Matt Paradowski, all seniors, provide South Brunswick with three experienced players on the attack.

Lorber, Dave Flanders and Joe Muha, all seniors, start on defense. Other defenders are Kabir Golfphin (senior), Benjamin Reilly (sophomore) and Mozi Zhan (senior).

Brad Lehan, a junior, is the starting goalie. Other goalies are William Russell (sophomore) and Trevor Krebs (senior).

Alex Berkuta, Ryan Wosznies, Andrew Shia, Daniel Joseph (sophomore), and Jesse Tainbow are all junior midfielders. Christopher Simmons, a senior, also plays the midfield.

The other players on the team are on the attack --  Matt Gorzynski and Daniel Joseph, both sophomores.

"We have very good experience but must play excellent team defense to have a successful year," said Ziminski, who will be assisted by Darren Geraci.

"The preseaon has been very productive and we look forward to a great
season."

South Brunswick will open the season at East Brunswick on April 3.
