Nursery Leaves Its Mark on Kingston

Part three of a three-part column.

Water was essential for the . Originally an irrigation system was setup by purchasing a pipeline given up by the Sun Oil Company (SUNOCO).

Well water was used for the family, which was of high quality. In 1932, a water system was put in place using a 125 foot water tower with a 75,000 gallon tank.

From this the family created the Kingston Water Company, providing water for the nursery and the village of Kingston as well. Specialized farm equipment devices were being created by the nurseries' own mechanics.

A device was created by William Jr., in which a tractor could drive over a tree, let down the blade to cut the roots, form the ball out of earth and lift it out of the ground.

They attempted to mechanize as much as possible. After the first attempt to put in a greenhouse went so smoothly, they continued to build them until they reached about 50.

Most were heated using a structural framework covered in polyethylene. They could keep growing all through winter. Plants could stand cold weather, it was the freeze and then the thaw that would kill them.

Princeton Nurseries stayed in business from 1911 until 1995 as one of the longest and most successful businesses in South Brunswick history.
